What Is an Incarnation Cross in Human Design? Right Angle, Juxtaposition and Left Angle

What an Incarnation Cross is in Human Design: the 4 Gates it is built from, the 3 angles, how to find yours and how to read it without over-reading.

The Incarnation Cross is one of the most quoted and least explained parts of a Human Design chart. It sits at the bottom of the chart with a name like "Right Angle Cross of Planning" and 4 numbers, and it is usually described in a few lines. This guide explains what it is made of, what the three angles are, how to find yours, and how to read it without over-reading it.

Everything here is a statement within the Human Design system. It is interpretive and not scientifically proven.

Key takeaways

  • An Incarnation Cross is made of 4 Gates: the Sun and Earth at birth and the Sun and Earth at the Design moment.
  • There are 192 crosses: 64 Gates in 3 angles (Right Angle, Juxtaposition, Left Angle).
  • The angle follows your Profile. The majority of people have a Right Angle cross.
  • In the system the cross is described as a life theme. It is a prompt for reflection and gives no verdict.
  • To find yours you need your date, time and place of birth.

What it is made of

An Incarnation Cross has 4 Gates:

  1. the Gate the Sun was in at your birth (your Personality Sun),
  2. the opposite Gate, where the Earth stood at your birth,
  3. the Gate of the Sun at the Design moment (your Design Sun),
  4. the opposite Gate of the Earth at the Design moment.

The Design moment lies about 3 months before your birth, more precisely when the Sun stood 88 degrees behind its birth position. In this model the Earth always stands exactly opposite the Sun, 180 degrees away. That is why the 4 Gates form a cross on the Wheel of Gates. The Gates guide explains the wheel.

The three angles

Each of the 64 Gates can be your Sun Gate in 3 angles, which gives 192 crosses. The angle is tied to your Profile:

Angle Profiles How it is read
Right Angle 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 A personal path. Your own experience is at the center.
Juxtaposition 4/1 A fixed path. The theme is said to be set early and to repeat.
Left Angle 4/6, 5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3 A path that works through other people. Others are part of the theme.

Right Angle crosses make up the largest group, because they cover 6 of the 12 Profiles. In chart software you will often see a number in brackets after the name, such as "Right Angle Cross of Planning (2)". The number says which arrangement of the same 4 Gates applies to you.

How to read your cross

In the teaching, the cross is the heading of a life, something that accompanies you and that you may grow into over the years. It is no task and no prediction. Here is a gentle way to work with it.

  1. Read the name and the 4 Gates. Look up each Gate's name and theme.
  2. Ask what comes back. Which themes return in your life again and again?
  3. Write your own heading. If you gave your life a title today, what would it be? Compare it to your cross if you like. It is fine if they do not match.

The cross gives you words for a conversation with yourself. If a description does not fit, you can leave it.

Crosses of eras

The system uses the same form for eras of humanity, each said to last about 400 years. Two of them are in the news for 2027: the Cross of Planning and the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix. If your personal cross shares Gates with one of them, the system describes that as carrying a theme of the era. That is a reading. It is no measurement. The 2027 overview tells the full story.

How to find your cross

You need 3 things: date, time and place of birth. From them a calculation finds the Sun and Earth Gates at birth and at the Design moment. Doing it by hand needs an ephemeris. A free chart calculator or a personal report does it for you. How a Human Design chart is calculated shows the steps and why the time matters.

For the cross itself, the birth time is often not decisive, because the Sun changes Gate only about every 5 to 6 days. If you were born near a boundary, even a few hours can matter.

What to keep in mind

  • The cross is one part of a chart.
  • The 3 angles are a reading tradition and cannot be tested.
  • Human Design is not accepted by science. Treat the cross as a mirror and not as a measurement.

A worked example

Chart notation lists the Personality Sun and Earth first, then the Design Sun and Earth, for example 37/40 | 9/16. Here is how that comes about.

  1. At birth the Sun stood in Gate 37. The Earth is exactly opposite, so it stood in Gate 40.
  2. About 3 months earlier, at the Design moment, the Sun stood in Gate 9. The Earth was opposite, in Gate 16.
  3. The 4 Gates 37, 40, 9 and 16 together form the cross. They are the same 4 Gates the system links to the era of planning, so the chart names this cross after Planning. If the person's Profile is one of the 6 Right Angle Profiles, the full name is Right Angle Cross of Planning, with a number in brackets that tells the arrangement.

This is an illustration with fixed numbers. Your own Gates come from your own birth data. Opposite Gates are always fixed pairs on the wheel, for example 37 and 40, 9 and 16, 55 and 59, or 34 and 20.

Personality side and Design side

The first pair of Gates comes from the Personality moment, your birth. The system links it to what you are aware of. The second pair comes from the Design moment and is linked to what runs below awareness. Many readers use that as a gentle idea: the cross has a side you know and a side you tend to meet through others.

Common mistakes when reading a cross

  • Reading one Gate alone. The cross is the combination of 4. Start with all 4 names.
  • Treating it as a purpose. The word "purpose" appears in many descriptions. In the teaching it is a theme and no assignment.
  • Comparing crosses. There is no ranking. A different cross is a different theme.
  • Taking it as fixed fate. Even a Juxtaposition cross, the one called fixed, is a reading and no proof of anything.

Frequently asked questions

What you may want to know.

What is an Incarnation Cross in Human Design?

It is the heading of a life, formed by 4 Gates: the Sun and Earth Gates at your birth and the Sun and Earth Gates at the Design moment, about 3 months before. It is read as a life theme.

How many Incarnation Crosses are there?

192. Each of the 64 Gates can be your Sun Gate in 3 angles: Right Angle, Juxtaposition and Left Angle.

Which Profiles have a Right Angle, Juxtaposition or Left Angle cross?

In the usual teaching, Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5 and 3/6 have a Right Angle cross, Profile 4/1 has a Juxtaposition cross, and Profiles 4/6, 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 have a Left Angle cross.

What does a Right Angle cross mean?

In the system, a Right Angle cross is read as a personal destiny: your own experience is at the center. A Juxtaposition cross is read as a fixed path, and a Left Angle cross as a theme that works through other people.

Can my cross change?

No. It follows from the moment of your birth. What can change is how you read it, and how much weight you give it.
