Human Design Gates Explained: How the 64 Gates Work

How the 64 Gates of Human Design work: the Wheel of Gates, Lines, Centers, Channels and how to read the Gates in your own chart.

Gates are the basic units of a Human Design chart. Almost everything in a chart, from Channels to Centers to your Incarnation Cross, is built from them. This guide explains what a Gate is, where Gates come from, how they connect, and how to read the Gates in your own chart.

Everything here is a statement within the Human Design system. It is interpretive and not scientifically proven.

Key takeaways

  • The zodiac is divided into 64 equal Gates of 5.625 degrees. Each Gate has 6 Lines.
  • The Gates come from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching.
  • Gates sit in 9 Centers. Two Gates that connect form a Channel, and Channels define Centers.
  • A Gate is active in your chart when a planet stood in it at birth or at the Design moment.
  • Gates describe themes and potentials in the system. They are not scientifically validated.

What a Gate is

Human Design divides the zodiac wheel into 64 equal sections called Gates. Each Gate is 5.625 degrees wide, because 360 divided by 64 is 5.625. Each Gate is split into 6 Lines of 0.9375 degrees each.

The Gates are taken from the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes. Each Gate carries the theme of its hexagram, expressed in the language of the system. Gate 20, for example, is called The Now, and Gate 59 is called Intimacy.

The Wheel of Gates

The Gates do not run in numerical order around the wheel. They follow the I Ching sequence laid onto the zodiac. That is why Gate 41 and Gate 19 sit next to each other on the wheel, while Gates 1 and 2 do not.

Because the wheel is tied to the zodiac, every Gate overlaps with a sign. The Sun needs about 5 to 6 days to cross one Gate, which means a whole year takes the Sun through all 64. The Moon crosses a Gate in roughly 10 hours.

How a Gate becomes yours

A Gate is active in your chart when a planet stood in it at one of two moments: your birth, or the Design moment about 3 months earlier. For both moments the positions of the Sun, Earth, Moon, Nodes and planets are found and each is placed in a Gate and Line. That gives up to 26 activations, 13 for the Personality (birth) and 13 for the Design. See how a chart is calculated.

In a chart, Personality activations are usually drawn in black and Design activations in a second color. The colors differ between tools. The Personality side is described as what you are aware of, and the Design side as what runs below awareness.

Gates, Centers and Channels

Every Gate belongs to one of 9 Centers: Head, Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen and Root.

When two Gates that are paired on the wheel are both active in your chart, they form a Channel. There are 36 Channels. A Channel connects two Centers and defines them. A Center that is defined is read as a steady source of a certain kind of energy. A Center without a Channel is open, which the system reads as a place where you are sensitive to others.

A Gate that is active without its partner is called a hanging Gate. It brings its theme but needs a connection from outside, for example from another person, to complete the Channel.

Examples from the 2027 crosses

The 8 Gates in the 2027 story show how Gates, Centers and themes fit together:

Gate Name Center
37 Friendship Solar Plexus
40 Aloneness Heart
9 Focus Sacral
16 Skills Throat
55 Spirit Solar Plexus
59 Intimacy Sacral
34 Power Sacral
20 The Now Throat

The first four form the Cross of Planning, the last four the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix.

How to read the Gates in your chart

  1. Start with Type and Authority. They are built from your Centers and Channels, so they give the frame. See the 5 types.
  2. Look at your Sun and Earth Gates. They give your Incarnation Cross.
  3. Read Gate by Gate. For each active Gate, read its name and theme once, then note which ones seem to fit you and which do not.
  4. Do not collect them all at once. A chart has many activations. It is fine to read a few and come back later.

Treat the descriptions as prompts. If one rings true, stay with it. If one does not, leave it.

What to keep in mind

  • Gates describe themes in the language of the system. They do not describe facts about you that can be measured.
  • Human Design is not accepted by science. Use it as a mirror for self-reflection.
  • A free chart shows you your Gates. A personal report explains them in plain language. Our guide on the difference between a free chart and a report helps you choose.

What the 6 Lines do

Inside each Gate, the 6 Lines add a finer shade to the theme. The Line names are the same ones used for Profiles:

Line Name Flavor
1 Investigator Foundation, study, security
2 Hermit Natural gift, retreat
3 Martyr Trial and error
4 Opportunist Network, friendship
5 Heretic Practical solution, projection
6 Role Model Observation, wisdom over time

A Gate with a different Line reads differently. Your Sun in Gate 20, Line 2 and someone else's in Gate 20, Line 5 share a theme but carry it in different ways. The Line is why 2 people with the same Gate are not described alike.

Reading one Gate: an example with Gate 20

Take Gate 20, The Now, in the Throat Center.

  1. Name and keynote. The Now: what is true in this moment.
  2. Center. The Throat is the Center of expression, so the theme is about saying or doing what is present.
  3. Line. Line 2 colors it with a natural gift and a pull to withdraw. Line 5 colors it with practical use and with the expectations of others.
  4. Your question. Where in my life do I speak or act from the present, and where from a plan?

This takes 5 minutes per Gate. You will not read all Gates in a day, and you do not need to.

Common mistakes

  • Reading every Gate as a trait. A Gate describes a theme. It is no character trait that must show up all the time.
  • Mixing up Gates and Channels. A Gate is one of 64 sections. A Channel is a pair of connected Gates. Defined Centers come from Channels.
  • Ignoring the Design side. The Gates from the Design moment are half of your chart.
  • Collecting. A long list of activations can overwhelm. Choose 2 or 3 to live with for a month.

A short routine to read your own Gates

  1. Write down your Type, Authority and Profile first. They give the frame.
  2. List your Sun and Earth Gates and your Incarnation Cross.
  3. Pick 1 Gate a day. Read its name and theme once. Mark it "fits", "partly" or "does not fit".
  4. After a week, look at the "fits" ones and ask what they have in common.

Frequently asked questions

What you may want to know.

What are Gates in Human Design?

Gates are the 64 equal sections of the zodiac wheel used by Human Design. Each is 5.625 degrees wide, has 6 Lines and carries a theme taken from an I Ching hexagram.

How many Gates and Channels are there?

64 Gates and 36 Channels. A Channel connects 2 Gates. A Gate that is active but not connected to its partner is called a hanging Gate.

How do I know which Gates I have?

They follow from where the Sun, Moon and planets stood at your birth and at the Design moment, about 3 months earlier. A chart calculator shows them.

What is the difference between a Gate and a Line?

A Gate is one of the 64 sections of the wheel. A Line is one of the 6 subdivisions of a Gate. Each Line is 0.9375 degrees wide.

Do Gates predict anything?

No. In the system they describe themes and potentials. There is no scientific evidence for predictive power, and critics classify Human Design as pseudoscience.
