A Human Design chart looks like a finished picture, but it is the result of a short calculation with clear inputs. This guide walks through it step by step: what goes in, how the 2 moments are found, how positions become Gates and Lines, and why your birth time matters more for some parts of the chart than for others.
Everything here describes the calculation steps of the Human Design system. The system itself is interpretive and not scientifically validated.
Key takeaways
- A chart needs 2 moments: your birth, and the Design moment about 3 months earlier, when the Sun stood 88 degrees behind its birth position.
- For both moments the positions of 13 bodies are found and placed on the Wheel of 64 Gates, each Gate with 6 Lines.
- The Sun changes Gate about every 5 to 6 days. The Moon changes Gate about every 10 hours and Line about every 2 hours.
- That is why birth time matters most for the Moon, and for your Ascendant and Houses.
- Time zones and daylight saving time are the most common source of errors.
What goes in
You need 3 things:
- Date of birth.
- Time of birth, as exact as possible.
- Place of birth. The place gives the time zone, which is needed to convert your local time to universal time (UTC).
The conversion is easy to get wrong. Time zones and daylight saving rules have changed over the decades in many places, so a good tool uses a historical time zone database for the place and date.
Step 1: the 2 moments
A chart uses two moments:
- The Personality moment: your birth.
- The Design moment: when the Sun stood 88 degrees behind its birth position. Because the Sun moves about 1 degree a day, the Design moment lies roughly 3 months before birth. The exact number of days varies between about 86 and 92, because the Sun moves faster in winter and slower in summer.
Step 2: find the positions
For each moment a calculation finds the position of 13 bodies on the zodiac wheel: Sun, Earth, Moon, the North Node and the South Node, and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Professional tools use an astronomical ephemeris, such as the Swiss Ephemeris, which many astrology programs use. The Earth is simply placed exactly opposite the Sun, and the South Node opposite the North Node.
Step 3: place them on the Wheel of Gates
The zodiac is divided into 64 Gates of 5.625 degrees, each with 6 Lines of 0.9375 degrees. The Wheel begins with Gate 41 at 2 degrees Aquarius, and the Gates follow in the I Ching order. Each position lands in one Gate and one Line. That gives up to 26 activations: 13 for the Personality moment and 13 for the Design moment. See Human Design Gates explained.
Step 4: from activations to your chart
With all activations known, the chart is built:
- Gates that are paired and both active form Channels.
- Channels define Centers.
- The pattern of defined Centers gives your Type and Authority. See the 5 Types.
- The Lines of your Personality Sun and Design Sun give your Profile. See the 12 Profiles.
- The Sun and Earth Gates at both moments give your Incarnation Cross. See what an Incarnation Cross is.
Why your birth time matters
The bodies move at very different speeds. That decides how sensitive each part of the chart is to the time.
| Body | Speed | Time to cross a Gate | Time to cross a Line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | about 1 degree a day | about 5 to 6 days | about 1 day |
| Moon | about 13 degrees a day | about 10 hours | about 2 hours |
| Planets, slower | well under 1 degree a day | weeks to years | days to months |
So:
- The Sun hardly cares about a few hours, unless you were born close to a boundary. Your Sun Gates, and so often your cross, are fairly stable.
- The Moon changes Gate about every 10 hours and Line about every 2 hours. An error of an hour or two can change a Line. An error of several hours can change a Gate, and with it a Channel, a Center, and sometimes your Type or Authority.
- Your Ascendant and Houses (from astrology) change sign about every 2 hours. They need an exact time.

What to do if you do not know your time
- Check documents. The birth certificate often states the time. Hospital records or a baby book can too.
- Ask family. A parent may remember the time to within an hour.
- Use noon with care. Many tools use 12:00 noon when no time is known. The Moon can then be off by up to roughly half a day of its travel, which is a lot. Treat Moon-based parts of the chart as uncertain.
- Skip the Ascendant and Houses. Without a time, they cannot be given.
Birth-time "rectification", finding a time from life events, is a separate practice with no scientific basis. We do not recommend relying on it.
Common sources of errors
- Wrong time zone or daylight saving time. The most common cause of different results.
- A different birth place with the same name. Check the country and region.
- Rounding. A time rounded to the nearest 15 minutes is usually fine, but a rounded hour may not be.
- Different ephemerides. Small differences exist, which matter only at the edge of a Line.
If two tools disagree, compare the Gate and Line of the Sun and Moon first. That usually shows where the difference starts.
What to keep in mind
The calculation is astronomy. What a Gate, a Channel or a Type means is interpretation within the Human Design system, and Human Design is not accepted by science. A free chart gives you the result of the calculation. A personal report explains it. See the difference between a free chart and a report.
Two worked examples
These examples show the arithmetic with simple numbers. Your own chart needs your own data and a proper ephemeris.
Example 1: from a position to a Gate and Line. The Wheel starts with Gate 41 at 2 degrees Aquarius. Each Gate is 5.625 degrees wide. Gate 30 is the 5th Gate on the wheel (after 41, 19, 13 and 49), so it starts at 2 + 4 x 5.625 = 24.5 degrees Aquarius. Say the Sun stands at 26 degrees 50 minutes Aquarius, which is 26.83 degrees. The distance into the Gate is 26.83 minus 24.5 = 2.33 degrees. A Line is 0.9375 degrees, so 2.33 divided by 0.9375 is about 2.5. That is the third Line. The Sun is in Gate 30, Line 3, written 30.3. This is the Sun position on February 15, 2027, which we also use in the date article.
Example 2: the Design moment. Someone born on July 15 has the Sun at about 23 degrees Cancer. 88 degrees behind is about 25 degrees Aries. The Sun passes that point around April 14, which is about 92 days before birth. Someone born on January 15 has the Sun at about 25 degrees Capricorn. 88 degrees behind is about 27 degrees Libra, passed by the Sun around October 20, which is about 87 days before birth. That is why the Design moment is "about 3 months" and not a fixed number of days.
A short checklist before you trust a chart
- The date and the place are correct, with the right country and region.
- The time is the local clock time, with daylight saving time handled by the tool.
- If you know the time only roughly, you have noted that the Moon, Lines, Ascendant and Houses are uncertain.
- If two tools disagree, you compared the Sun and Moon Gate and Line first.
Frequently asked questions
What you may want to know.
What do I need to calculate a Human Design chart?
Your date, time and place of birth. The place gives the time zone, which is needed to convert your local birth time to universal time.
What is the Design date in Human Design?
It is the moment when the Sun stood 88 degrees behind its position at your birth. It usually lies between about 86 and 92 days before birth, because the Sun's speed varies through the year.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For your Sun Gates and often your Incarnation Cross, the time is less critical, because the Sun changes Gate only about every 5 to 6 days. For the Moon, Lines, your Ascendant and Houses, the time matters. The Moon changes Line about every 2 hours.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Many tools use 12:00 noon. Then the Moon position can be off by up to roughly 6 hours of its travel, and Ascendant and Houses cannot be given. Check your birth certificate or ask family for the time.
Why do two chart calculators give different results?
The most common reasons are a wrong time zone or daylight saving time, a different birth place, a rounding of the time, or a different ephemeris. Compare the Gate and Line of the Sun and Moon first.
